Frequently Asked Questions:
What is winter percussion?

Winter percussion is an indoor, high-energy, performance-based musical activity. It is similar to marching band and drum corps, however in winter percussion, the percussionists are the focal point – many winter percussion groups consist of only a drum line and front ensemble, sometimes paired with other performers to enhance the specific show. Also, instead of performing on a football field, winter percussion groups perform on a giant tarp in a basketball gym or arena. This activity is also typically more theatrical than marching band or drum corps as the performers are much closer to the audience. Winter percussion seasons typically run from October to April each year. For more information on winter percussion, visit wgi.org.
Is there an age requirement to participate?
Generally, IMPACT Percussion’s membership consists of young adults between the ages of 17 – 22. Per WGI rules, members cannot be over 22 years of age as of 12:01 am of April 1st of any given year.

How often are rehearsals?
IMPACT Percussion primarily rehearses on the weekends throughout the season (October – April of each year). Typical times are Saturdays: 10 am – 10 pm, Sundays: 9 am – 6 pm. Rehearsals are not every weekend at the beginning of the season, but rehearsals become more frequent as the season progresses. We also hold a four or five-day rehearsal camp during winter break. Competitions typically start late February, and most competitions are held in the Portland area. Please visit our Online Calendar for the most up-to-date schedule.
What if I’m involved in other music / after school groups / have other commitments?
Being a member of IMPACT Percussion requires a significant commitment of time and energy. In general, members must plan on attending every rehearsal and performance throughout the season. Some limited exceptions can be made (if you’re auditioning for a drum corps one weekend, for example), but in general, everyone needs to attend every rehearsal for the group to be successful and reach its full potential. Staff members are aware that some members may be involved in other school music activities and other groups. All prospective members should communicate any schedule conflicts as early as possible with staff members so we can be successful as an ensemble, and so you can successful in all you do outside of IMPACT.
What if I’m involved in DCI?

Each year, many IMPACT members audition for and march in drum corps across the country. We encourage this! It is very possible to march WGI and DCI at the same time. Many DCI ensembles also plan for many of their members marching in WGI ensembles. If you are planning to audition for a drum corps, please let your Caption Supervisor know so we can discuss and review any potential schedule conflicts.
Where are rehearsals held?
IMPACT Percussion rehearsals are typically held at several different locations primarily throughout the Tri-Cities area. Sometimes, IMPACT will rehearse in the Portland area. A detailed rehearsal schedule with locations will be made available at the start of each season.
Is housing provided for rehearsal camps?
IMPACT Percussion typically does not provide housing for out-of-town members during rehearsal camps. Out-of-town members may work with local members for potential housing accommodations. Members coming from out-of-town each weekend may also look into securing their own accommodations through hotels, Airbnbs, or other options.

Does IMPACT Percussion provide meals during rehearsal camps?
IMPACT Percussion does not provide any meals during rehearsal camps. Members may bring meals to rehearsals (we typically have access to a fridge and microwave at most locations), or members may go out to eat during lunch and dinner breaks. Staff encourage all members to make healthy eating choices throughout the season!
How does the trip to Dayton, OH work?
Each April, IMPACT Percussion travels to Dayton, OH for the WGI Percussion World Championships! This is an exciting and memorable culminating trip where we get to show off our program to the world. Details about this trip can be found on our Dayton Trip Info Page. More specific details will be released to members as we get closer to this trip.
